Construction of Chicago, Indiana & Southern Railroad Bridge over Kankakee River, 1909 – Shelby, Indiana

Construction of Chicago, Indiana & Southern Railroad Bridge over Kankakee River, 1909 - Shelby, Indiana

Remark: This rail line located east of Shelby and crossing the Kankakee River has been called several different names due to changes in track ownership. Originally the Illinois, Indiana and Iowa Railroad, commonly referred to as the 3Is, the track was constructed in 1881 from Streator, Illinois, to North Judson, Indiana, and later extended beyond these towns. The line became the Chicago Indiana & Southern Railroad (CI&S) when the Illinois, Indiana & Iowa Railroad and Indiana Harbor Railroad merged in 1906.

The stock of the CI&S was owned entirely by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (LS&MS) and the Michigan Central Railroad, both of which were part of the New York Central Railroad (NYC). Thus, the track was often referred to as the New York Central line.

The line was commonly referred to as the Kankakee Belt. The purpose of this particular line was to provide a crossover route for commodities originating in the west and southwest on the Burlington rail line over to the New York Central rail line without having to travel through Chicago.

The bridge seen here was constructed in 1909 with the Bernhisel Construction Company of Evanston, Illinois serving as the contractor. According to the 1909 annual report published by the Chicago, Indiana & Southern Railroad, the cost of the structure was $49,881.41 [equivalent to $1.27 million in 2013 dollars]. The annual report also notes that this particular section of the Kankakee Division of the CI&S included "relaying tracks with heavier rails, additional ballasting and strengthening and renewing bridges to put the roadbed in condition for heavier power."

The bridge is also mentioned in the "Biennial Report of the Commissioner of Fisheries and Game of Indiana, For the Fiscal Years 1911 and 1912" where it is stated on page 100: At the southeastern corner of Lake County is the C., I. & S. Railway bridge, built two years ago. It is the longest and best bridge that spans the Kankakee River, being about 800 feet long, constructed of reinforced concrete. During the greater part of the year the river follows a bed that is only fifty or sixty feet wide at this place; but on both shores are wide expanses of thickly-grown marsh-grass, which when they become the bed of the river in the spring, reach to such an extent that so long a bridge is necessary.

Note that this bridge still exists. Modern photographs of the bridge can be found here [scroll about two-thirds down the webpage to view the images].

Indian Railways Plasser Tamper and Stabiliser Machines at Work

31 October 2015, Ketohalli, KA.
Machines: Plasser India 08-32 Tamper, and DGS-62 PLS Dynamic Track Stabiliser.

Getting to see the highly complicated machinery that are used by Indian Railways for track maintenance was always on my to-do list, but that involved getting lucky since we have no idea exactlywhen and where these machines are used.

This footage is from when I got lucky to see these machines arrive at exactly the spot I was waiting to shoot trains, and the crew were kind enough to let me take photos and videos of the machines in operations.

This is how it works:
Powered by a 300+ hp engine, the 08-32 tamping machine gets to work by lifting the rails and packing ballast underneath to achieve a stable base in case there are issues with the rails sinking in a bit. Based on the configuration, these machines can lift two, three or four sleepers in one go.

Once the tamper is finished, the DGS 62 is fired up. It is primarily used to restore the resistance of the rails to lateral movement brought forth by passing trains. It is equipped with a vibrating unit that grips the rails and applies vertical loading combined with horizontal vibration to simulate thousands of tonnes of trains passing over it in a very short period of time. This helps the Railways avoid imposing speed restrictions until the rails have recovered their resistance while also creating an even more stable ballast base. One pass of this stabiliser is equivalent to 100,000 tons of train traffic, which is why it is very beneficial. The vibration generated by this machine is so high that I could feel the ground beneath my feet vibrating strongly when the machine passed by the camera.

As soon as these machines are done, they travel to the next station, and reverse on to the adjacent track to return to their base; rail traffic is resumed as soon as they clear the line, and most of the times no speed restrictions are imposed unless the tamping has been performed on a bridge. Stabilisers are not used on bridges as the huge amount of vibration generated can damage their foundations.
