Over the past half-century, scientists have shaved silicon films down to just a wisp of atoms in pursuit of smaller, faster electronics. For the next set of breakthroughs, though, they’ll need novel ways to build even tinier and more powerful devices.

A study led by UChicago researchers, published Sept. 20 in Nature, describes an innovative method to make stacks of semiconductors just a few atoms thick. The technique offers scientists and engineers a simple, cost-effective method to make thin, uniform layers of these materials, which could expand capabilities for devices from solar cells to cell phones.

Stacking thin layers of materials offers a range of possibilities for making electronic devices with unique properties. But manufacturing such films is a delicate process, with little room for error.

“The scale of the problem we’re looking at is, imagine trying to lay down a flat sheet of plastic wrap the size of Chicago without getting any air bubbles in it,” said Jiwoong Park, a UChicago professor with the Department of Chemistry, the Institute for Molecular Engineering and the James Franck Institute, who led the study. “When the material itself is just atoms thick, every little stray atom is a problem.”

Today, these layers are “grown” instead of stacking them on top of one another. But that means the bottom layers have to be subjected to harsh growth conditions such as high temperatures while the new ones are added — a process that limits the materials with which to make them.

Park’s team instead made the films individually. Then they put them into a vacuum, peeled them off and stuck them to one another, like Post-It notes. This allowed the scientists to make films that were connected with weak bonds instead of stronger covalent bonds — interfering less with the perfect surfaces between the layers.

“The films, vertically controlled at the atomic-level, are exceptionally high-quality over entire wafers,” said Kibum Kang, a postdoctoral associate who was the first author of the study.

Kan-Heng Lee, a graduate student and co-first author of the study, then tested the films’ electrical properties by making them into devices and showed that their functions can be designed on the atomic scale, which could allow them to serve as the essential ingredient for future computer chips.

The method opens up a myriad of possibilities for such films. They can be made on top of water or plastics; they can be made to detach by dipping them into water; and they can be carved or patterned with an ion beam. Researchers are exploring the full range of what can be done with the method, which they said is simple and cost-effective.

“We expect this new method to accelerate the discovery of novel materials, as well as enabling large-scale manufacturing,” Park said.

How $5 billion of debt caught up with Toys ‘R’ Us

(Reuters) – Toys “R” Us Inc has been making $400 million in interest payments on its debt every year, largely due to its $6.6 billion leveraged buyout in 2005. This week, it succumbed to its debt burden, leading to the biggest bankruptcy of a U.S. retailer since that of Kmart in 2004.

The largest U.S. toy retailer’s decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday took investors by surprise, given that the company faced no imminent debt maturities and had managed to overcome financial stress in the past by securing concessions from its creditors.

But company’s ability to kick the can down the road had been exhausted. The bankruptcy filing was the culmination of an unsuccessful seven-month effort by Toys “R” Us to find relief from its $5.2 billion debt pile, according to bankruptcy court filings and people familiar with the deliberations.

The advisers that Toys “R” Us hired to fix its capital structure explored at least two deals with some of its creditors to raise money that would have helped the company stave off bankruptcy before the key holiday shopping season, avoiding a supply chain disruption stemming from vendor fears about repayment, a bankruptcy filing shows.

The Wayne, New Jersey-based company’s creditors’ unwillingness to show any more leniency underscores the lack of confidence by investors in the troubled brick-and-mortar retail sector, which has been pummeled by the rise of e-commerce companies such as Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O).

Toys “R” Us was looking to raise at least $200 million to make it to January, at which point it could work on fixing its entire capital structure, according to court filings. Over the years, Toys “R” Us had been able to win other short-term fixes from creditors, even as its financial performance deteriorated.

Once the company realized that it could not secure financing to get through the holiday season, the objective became “let’s get it done as quick as possible so it does not interrupt the holidays,” Toys “R” Us Chief Executive Officer David Brandon told Reuters in an interview. Filing for bankruptcy allowed the company to secure financing to continue to operate its stores.

Given that “we successfully obtained our debtor-in-possession financing today, we can assure our lenders that we are in a good position to accept shipments on a normal basis and they have great assurance they will be paid,” Brandon said.

FAILED DEALS

Like other retailers that own their stores, Toys “R” Us tried last month to tap its vast real estate portfolio to raise money in a sale-leaseback transaction, according to court filings. Sale-leaseback deals allow retailers to raise cash by selling real estate they own and then renting it back from the new owner.

For example, Bon-Ton Stores Inc (BONT.O), another retailer in financial distress, completed a similar deal last week, generating $18.9 million to pay down its debt.

In an attempt to clinch the sale-leaseback deal, Toys “R” Us negotiated with a key group of creditors holding a portion of the company’s $1 billion term loan, but accounting issues and a tight time frame prevented them from reaching an agreement, according to people familiar with the matter.

Toys “R” Us also went to the bondholders of its international affiliates last month for financing it planned to use to fund its U.S. operations, but the terms offered were too expensive, the people said.

At that point, Toys “R” Us decided to change tack and initiate preparations for a Chapter 11 filing in September, ahead of the quarterly earnings release on Sept. 26. News reports about the possible bankruptcy on Sept. 6 accelerated bankruptcy preparations, because suppliers to Toys “R” Us curbed their shipments, afraid they might not be repaid, according to the filings.

In a sign of the company’s haste, it filed for bankruptcy without a plan of reorganization or a deal with creditors, as is preferred in these circumstances. Toys “R” Us said it plans to keep its stores open through the bankruptcy process, though it remains unclear whether it can emerge from bankruptcy with most of its approximately 1,600 stores still open.

On Tuesday, Toys “R” Us Inc received bankruptcy court permission to borrow more than $2 billion to start paying suppliers, so it can stock up on items like Lego building blocks and Barbie dolls for the holiday season.

Private equity firms KKR & Co LP (KKR.N) and Bain Capital LP, together with real estate investment trust Vornado Realty Trust (VNO.N), took Toys “R” Us private in 2005. On Monday, they all supported the company filing for bankruptcy, according to the sources.

When Hurricane Andrew walloped South Florida in August 1992, Tom Murphy Jr., a third generation Irish-American builder, set out with his mid-size construction company to help rebuild the Florida Keys. The Miami-based general contractor quickly made a name for itself and its disaster recovery efforts, rebuilding Ocean Reef Club and various other structures in south Miami-Dade County.

In shedding bonds, Fed aims for boring end to crisis-era measures

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Reserve is set on Wednesday to announce the start of a plan to trim its $4.5-trillion (3.31 trillion pounds) portfolio of assets, much of it amassed in response to the 2007-2009 financial collapse, marking another milestone in bringing to an end the crisis-era measures.

If Fed Chair Janet Yellen gets her way, financial markets that had swung wildly with past shifts to the policy will barely shrug when the asset reduction begins, probably in October.

The plan is for the Fed to stop buying bonds so gradually that it will take years for its holdings to shrink to $3 trillion, around where some policymakers and economists estimate it will settle.

The Fed’s asset holdings stood at about $900 billion in mid-2008, before it began buying bonds to spur hiring and economic growth.

Years of planning and months of careful public messaging should make the asset-unwinding process about as riveting as “watching paint dry,” according to Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Patrick Harker.

The U.S. central bank is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its Sept. 19-20 policy meeting, according to a Reuters poll of nearly 100 economists, with markets pricing in a 52 percent chance of a rate hike coming at a December meeting.

The Fed will also release a fresh round of projections on Wednesday, laying out policymakers’ own expectations for rate hikes ahead.

LEADING OTHER CENTRAL BANKS

With the U.S. economy growing fast enough to keep unemployment well below half its recession-era peak, the Fed is poised to be the first major central bank to begin pulling back from the final stage of emergency measures post-2008.

Under Yellen, the Fed has raised interest rates four times from near zero and stopped accumulating assets. The next stage is not to sell holdings but to halt the reinvestment of proceeds from maturing bonds.

Thanks to synchronized global growth and still-easy financial conditions, the Fed looks able to avoid past shocks, most notably the so-called “taper tantrum” in 2013 that rocked markets worldwide and spiked bond yields when then-Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke suggested the purchases could soon be reduced, or tapered.

“The market is going to be very sensitive to what’s going on here,” Peter Hooper, a former Fed economist who is now chief economist at Deutsche Bank Securities, said earlier this month.

“But we no longer need all this extraordinary monetary easing that we have seen since the crisis, so it’s time to do so.”

The Fed’s counterparts in Frankfurt and Tokyo will be among those watching the process most closely, given the potential ripple effects on their markets and economies, and the lessons to be learned from the U.S. experiment.

Combined, the three central banks hold some $15 trillion in assets, purchases that were meant to encourage riskier investing but that critics say may be distorting financial conditions. (For a graphic of combined purchases by central banks, see: tmsnrt.rs/2inHILp)

TENTATIVE START

The Fed will start by trimming no more than $10 billion per month from its balance sheet, with that cap rising each quarter for a year, until it hits $50 billion per month.

That should shed nearly $300 billion in bonds over the first 12 months, and nearly $500 billion over the second, according to analysts’ projections.

The main unanswered question is whether the central bank will spread its remaining monthly repurchases evenly across the spectrum of maturities, or whether it will focus on shorter-dated assets and accelerate the process.

That will affect how far long-term yields may rise as the Fed allows bonds to run off. Another wild card may be the pace at which the Fed’s mortgage-bond holdings shrinks, which depends in part on homeowners’ refinancing decisions.

Attempts elsewhere to exit asset-purchase programs, known as quantitative easing, have not met with success.

The Bank of Japan was the first major central bank to introduce such a program in 2001, and its end in 2006 was followed by an economic downturn.

The BOJ later had to restart quantitative easing and broaden it, and today is nowhere close to ending purchases.

The European Central Bank, for its part, undertook two rate hikes in 2011 that it subsequently reversed, then in 2015 started its own purchases.

But with financial conditions supportive, the Fed’s runoff will remain on “autopilot” unless there are “large adverse developments” that force adjustments, Fed Governor Lael Brainard said this month.

A team of researchers from the University of Houston has reported a breakthrough in stretchable electronics that can serve as an artificial skin, allowing a robotic hand to sense the difference between hot and cold, while also offering advantages for a wide range of biomedical devices.

The work, reported in the journal Science Advances, describes a new mechanism for producing stretchable electronics, a process that relies upon readily available materials and could be scaled up for commercial production.

Cunjiang Yu, Bill D. Cook Assistant Professor of mechanical engineering and lead author for the paper, said the work is the first to create a semiconductor in a rubber composite format, designed to allow the electronic components to retain functionality even after the material is stretched by 50 percent.

The work is the first semiconductor in rubber composite format that enables stretchability without any special mechanical structure, Yu said.

He noted that traditional semiconductors are brittle and using them in otherwise stretchable materials has required a complicated system of mechanical accommodations. That’s both more complex and less stable than the new discovery, as well as more expensive, he said.

“Our strategy has advantages for simple fabrication, scalable manufacturing, high-density integration, large strain tolerance and low cost,” he said.

Yu and the rest of the team – co-authors include first author Hae-Jin Kim, Kyoseung Sim and Anish Thukral, all with the UH Cullen College of Engineering – created the electronic skin and used it to demonstrate that a robotic hand could sense the temperature of hot and iced water in a cup. The skin also was able to interpret computer signals sent to the hand and reproduce the signals as American Sign Language.

“The robotic skin can translate the gesture to readable letters that a person like me can understand and read,” Yu said.

The artificial skin is just one application. Researchers said the discovery of a material that is soft, bendable, stretchable and twistable will impact future development in soft wearable electronics, including health monitors, medical implants and human-machine interfaces.

The stretchable composite semiconductor was prepared by using a silicon-based polymer known as polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS, and tiny nanowires to create a solution that hardened into a material which used the nanowires to transport electric current.

“We foresee that this strategy of enabling elastomeric semiconductors by percolating semiconductor nanofibrils into a rubber will advance the development of stretchable semiconductors, and … will move forward the advancement of stretchable electronics for a wide range of applications, such as artificial skins, biomedical implants and surgical gloves,” they wrote.

Researchers have developed a new computational method to rapidly screen the effects of point mutations in bacteria to make biofuel production more efficient — ScienceDaily

Combining neutron and X-ray imaging gives clues to how ancient weapons were manufactured

Converting fibrous plant waste, like corn stalks and wood shavings, into fermentable simple sugars for the production of biofuel is no simple process. Bacteria must break down tough leaves, stems and other cellulosic matter resistant to degradation to turn them into usable energy.

Helping bacteria become more efficient in this process could result in more affordable biofuels for our gas tanks and sustainable products such as bioplastics. One way to achieve this goal is to re-engineer the bacterial enzyme complexes, called cellulosomes, which serve as catalysts in the degradation process.

In an effort to produce these so-called designer cellulosomes, the international research consortium CellulosomePlus is developing methods to enhance the efficiency of this complex engineering process to make it economically feasible and effective. Consortium researchers from Spain, Poland and Ireland reported their findings for one method recently in The Journal of Chemical Physics, from AIP Publishing.

The researchers focused on the Clostridium thermocellum (C. thermocellum) bacterium. Capable of directly converting cellulose into ethanol, especially at elevated temperatures, the bacterium has garnered much interest as an optimal biofuel catalyst.

Notably, C. thermocellum has a large cellulosome that degrades cellulose through simultaneous action of many enzymes, mostly cellulases. The enzymes are parts of molecules called dockerins, which form non-covalent complexes with various protein domains called cohesin domains. These domains are connected segments of a scaffoldin, a large protein that serves as the cellulosome backbone. Cellulosome function requires the cohesins to be mechanically strong and the cellulases to be effective enzymes in transforming plant waste into sugar.

“One way to design a better cellulosome is to improve the mechanical stability of type-I cohesins and re-engineer the cellulase units,” said Marek Cieplak, co-author of the paper who directs the Laboratory of Biological Physics at the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences.

The researchers targeted the c7A cohesin of C. thermocellum because it appears to be subjected to more intense mechanical stress than other cohesins and is exceptionally mechanically stable.

A computational method was developed to identify which point mutations, single amino acid replacements, would lead to stronger mechanical stability as well as higher thermodynamic stability. Using all-atom computations, the researchers identified the mutations by systematically replacing all amino acids with either alanine or phenylalanine.

“One interesting result is that the mutations have a non-obvious impact on the internal structure of the protein and thus on the stabilities,” said Mateusz Chwastyk, also one of the publication’s authors and Cieplak’s former student.

Specifically, the changes in the contact map (the list of amino acid pairs that affect conformational dynamics) can be non-local. The best choices were tested experimentally. The researchers also found that adding disulfide bonds, which form between different amino acids in a protein chain, made the protein extremely resistant to stretching.

“Our theoretical method seems to be a valid approximation for screening the effects of mutations in the mechanical and thermal stabilities of proteins,” Cieplak said.

The proposed method is universal, can be applied to multiple mutations, and is currently used to explain properties of bacteria that live in extreme environments.

David Bell, director of Detroit’s Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department, said in an email that owner’s suites, utility spaces and other unoccupied areas were still being completed, and construction materials and fencing still needed to be removed from the site, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Detroit’s Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department issued temporary occupancy certificates for both the arena and its parking garage. Bell said the department requires that “one hundred percent of the life-safety items are in compliance with the building codes” for them to issue a certificate.

Mike Jackson, executive secretary-treasurer of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights said, “I know they’re running three shifts [of workers]. A construction project that size is going to have changes along the way.”

Donations came from the Kent Corporation ($8 million), the Iowa Corn Promotion Board ($4 million) and Sukup Manufacturing Co. $2 million) to help fund the $21.2 million facility, which will be built completely from private giving, World-Grain.com reported.

“We are very grateful to Kent, Iowa Corn Promotion Board and Sukup Manufacturing for their lead gifts that will jump-start in-depth planning and development of our feed mill and grain science complex,” said Benjamin Allen, interim president of Iowa State University. “Their tremendous generosity will help make this facility a valuable addition to hands-on student learning, meaningful faculty research, and extension and outreach to industry workforce.”

Further details, including construction plans will follow at a later date to be presented to the Iowa Board of Regents for approval.

Currently, plans for the complex include:

  • a feed mill tower,
  • feed milling and mixing structures,
  • grain storage bins, and
  • a one-story classroom and lab facility.
  • The complex will provide students in a range of agricultural majors with hands-on learning opportunities, especially in the wake of Iowa State faculty’s efforts to create a new feed and grain technology minor, World-Grain.com reported.

    “The Airport Improvement Program helps to maintain our aviation infrastructure and supports safety, capacity, security and environmental improvements,” said Secretary Chao. “This is an important investment in these airports and the economic vitality of their respective communities.”

    The airport grant program funds various types of airport infrastructure projects, including runways, taxiways, and airport signage, lighting, and markings, all of which help to create thousands of jobs.

    To date this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced nearly 1,580 new grants to nearly 1,294 airports for a total of $2.8 billion. These grants will provide funds for 646 runway projects and 557 taxiway projects that are important to the safety and efficiency of the nation’s system of airports.

    Airports are entitled to a certain amount of AIP funding each year, based on passenger volume. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, then the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding.

    Those airports receiving discretionary grants are listed here, while the entitlement grant recipients can be found on the FAA website.

    Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, $2.8 million – funds will be used to acquire replacement snow removal equipment.

    Juneau International Airport in Juneau, Alaska, $10.2 million – funds will be used to construct two new airport aprons to provide more area for aircraft to park.

    Memorial Field in Hot Springs, Ark., $2.2. million – funds will be used to expand the terminal apron to provide additional space for aircraft parking.

    Pago Pago International Airport in Pago Pago American Samoa, $10 million – grant funds will be used to repair the terminal apron where commercial aircraft park.

    Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Ariz., $2 million – funds will be used reconstruct part of the terminal apron.

    Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, Calif., $6.5 million – the grant will fund noise mitigation measures for an estimated 440 homes and approximately 1,840 residents who live near the airport.

    San Diego International Airport in San Diego, Calif., $8.0 million – grant funds will be used to mitigate noise for an estimated 715 residents who live near the airport.

    Brown Field Municipal Airport in San Diego, Calif., $5.7 million – grant funds will be used to repair Runway 08L/26R.

    Fresno Yosemite International Airport in Fresno, Calif., $13.3 million – the grant will fund the repair of Taxiway C.

    Alexandria International Airport in Alexandria, La., $9.3 million – the grant will fund noise mitigation measures for an estimated 140 residents who live near the airport.

    New Bedford Regional Airport in New Bedford, Mass., $7.3 million – funds will be used to repair Runway 14/32.

    Orange Municipal Airport in Orange, Mass., $1.7 million – grant funds will be used to repair Taxiway D.

    Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport in Lee’s Summit, Mo., $6.0 million – grant funds will be used for the extension of Taxiway A and installation of lights on the taxiway.     John F. Kennedy International Airport in N.Y., $22.7 million – funds will be used to install electric charging stations for electric ground service equipment vehicles to reduce airport emissions.  Funds will also be used to repair Taxiway Q.

    James M. Cox Dayton International Airport in Dayton, Ohio, $10.4 million – grant funds will be used to repair the terminal apron where aircraft park.

    Roberts Field in Redmond, Ore., $9.5 million – grant funds will be used to repair Runway 11/29.

    Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Fort Worth, Texas, $52.2 million – funds will be used to upgrade the terminal aircraft parking apron lighting to improve the airports energy efficiency. Funds will also be used to repair Runway 17C/35C, which is the primary runway at the airport.

    George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport in Houston, Texas, $21.3 million – funds will be used to repair a widen one of the main taxiways at the airport to accommodate larger aircraft.

    Cedar City Regional Airport in Cedar City, Utah, $3 million – grant funds will be used to repair multiple aprons where aircraft park and Taxiways C and A.

    Canyonlands Field in Moab, Utah, $11.9 million – grant funds will be used to improve Runway 03/21.

    Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah, $10 million – funds will be used to repair the south terminal apron used to park commercial aircraft.

    Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport in Blacksburg, Va., $9.4 million – funds will be used to extend Runway 12/30.

    Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave, Va., $1.7 million – grant funds will be used to repair the airport taxiway.

    Baraboo Wisconsin Dells Airport in Baraboo, Wis., $1.8 million – grant funds will be used to repair Runway 01/19. As a participant in the State Block Grant Program, the state of Wisconsin administers AIP funds for non-primary airports, including Baraboo Wisconsin Dells Airport, in the state.

    Dodge County Airport in Juneau, Wis., $2.6 million – grant funds will be used to repair Runway 08/26 and the runway lighting. As a participant in the State Block Grant Program, the state of Wisconsin administers AIP funds for non-primary airports, including Dodge County Airport, in the state.

    Jackson Hole Airport in Jackson, Wyo., $6 million – funds will be used to repair the commercial apron.

    The grants will ensure the projects at these airports are either under construction or completed prior to the onset of the winter season.

    This announcement follows one made earlier this month stating that the FAA would provide $151.1 million in infrastructure grants to 66 airports across the country.

    Target slashes prices on thousands of items, shares falter

    (Reuters) – Target Corp (TGT.N) said on Friday that it lowered prices on thousands of items, from cereal to baby formula, further hurting retail stocks already pressured by Kroger Co’s (KR.N) disappointing quarterly results spurred by price cuts.

    Target, which vowed earlier in the year to aggressively clamp down on prices to compete with rivals Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O), said it had spent months reassessing the prices of everyday items such as milk, eggs, razors and bath tissue.

    The retailer, which said it would continue to offer discounts on some products in addition to the price-cuts, added that it had also eliminated more than two-thirds of its price and offer call-outs.

    The retailer’s shares were down as much as 4.7 percent in midday trading on Friday, in-line with a slump among retail stocks after Kroger reported price cuts hurting its bottom line.

    Target wants to make it easier for customers to spot lower prices by removing the guesswork that comes with temporary deals, Mark Tritton, Target’s chief merchandising officer, said in a blog post.

    A-Line Partners analyst Gabriella Santaniello said the move might initially cost Target in margins, but that lower prices and fewer temporary price cuts may also drive sales volumes that could eventually offset eroding margins.

    “At the end of the day people just want everyday lower prices and that is what Target is aiming to do.”

    When Target first announced in February that it would cut prices and miss full-year profit estimates, its shares plunged to a 2-1/2-year low.

    Like Target, Kroger, the biggest U.S. supermarket company, has slashed prices on staples such as milk and eggs to fend off competition from Wal-Mart, discounters Lidl and Aldi, and the newly merged Amazon and Whole Foods Market.

    Amazon.com’s $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods has the grocery industry on edge, worried that the online retail giant could upend the fresh food business in the way it did with books and electronics.

    Amazon last month lowered prices on some Whole Foods groceries including avocados and beef.

    “I don’t think this came out of nowhere. (Target) were clearly picking up on the signals and the consumer’s response to Amazon and it is clear to me Amazon encroaching on their space,” A-Line Partners analyst Gabriella Santaniello said.

    Shares in Amazon were down 0.7 percent, while Wal-Mart was down about 2 percent and Kroger’s stock tumbled nearly 10 percent, hitting a 3-1/2 year low.

    Trailer towing involves three primary elements: the work truck used to tow; the trailer and payload being towed; and towing system components (e.g., hitch system and safety chains). Each has limiting factors that directly affect maximum towing capability.

    Trailer towing involves three primary elements: the work truck used to tow; the trailer and payload being towed; and towing system components (e.g., hitch system and safety chains). Each has limiting factors that directly affect maximum towing capability.

    Truck salespeople, fleet managers and end users face challenges in determining size and capacity of the trailer that can be towed based on the work truck specified or purchased. First, let’s review the tow vehicle’s rating. Truck manufacturers publish maximum trailer tow rating and gross combined weight rating (GCWR) in the trailer towing guide or as part of the vehicle specification guide. Additionally, the trailer towing guide may include maximum trailer tow ratings based on conventional towing (which uses a coupling device attached to the rear of the towing vehicle) or fifth wheel towing (which utilizes a coupling device attached to the top of the chassis near the rear axle and is sometimes referred to as a gooseneck). Alternatively, medium- and heavy-duty truck dealers provide information based on the OEM order guide or through application engineering departments. The chassis manufacturer determines GCWR using a variety of factors, including specific drivetrain components of the engine, transmission, number of drive axles, axle ratios and braking capability. Each OEM tests chassis towing and stopping capability before determining vehicle GCWR.

    Chassis manufacturers also provide maximum trailer weights for conventional and fifth wheel/gooseneck towing. Normally, these maximum trailer weights are for complete vehicles such as pickups and vans, and do not include work trucks built from incomplete chassis. Truck GCWR helps determine maximum trailer towing capacity. Both the weight of the towing vehicle and the trailer (towed vehicle) are included in the GCWR total. Essentially, vehicle trailer towing capacity is determined by remaining GCWR after taking into consideration chassis, truck body, equipment, passenger, fuel and payload weight. The amount of payload carried on the work truck can raise or lower maximum trailer towing capacity. For example, if your work truck has a 26,000-pound GCWR and 19,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and is completely loaded to the GVWR, maximum trailer weight would be 7,000 pounds — even if the truck manufacturer stated the maximum trailer weight was 11,000 pounds.

    The second element of trailer towing is trailer GVWR — the maximum allowed weight of the trailer and its payload, which can be found on the required trailer certification label. Typically, the certification label for a trailer is a metal plate welded or riveted to the forward half of the left front. Trailer GVWR will be based on the limiting factors of the axle(s), tires, frame, coupler and safety chains. The trailer manufacturer is required to take all components into consideration when determining final GVWR.

    The third factor in trailer towing is the trailer coupling system, which contains the components necessary to connect the towing vehicle and trailer. Conventional trailer, fifth wheel and gooseneck towing systems are rated by SAE International Standards.

  • SAE J2638 Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Attachment Performance Up to 30,000-lb Trailer Gross Vehicle Weight is for lighter duty fifth wheel and gooseneck type trailer towing
  • SAE J684 divides conventional-style (receiver hitch and ball) trailer hitch systems into four classes:

  • Class 1 for trailers not to exceed 2,000 pounds
  • Class 2 for trailers over 2,000 pounds and not to exceed 3,500 pounds
  • Class 3 for trailers over 3,500 pounds and not to exceed 5,000 pounds
  • Class 4 for trailers over 5,000 pounds and not to exceed 10,000 pounds
  • Conventional hitch manufacturers rate their receiver-style hitches using this capacity format. Some market Class 5 hitches up to 17,000 pounds; however, SAE J684 does not contain a rating for this class.

    Pintle hook hitch system (another type of conventional coupling system) performance ratings are covered by SAE Recommended Practice J847. It does not specify rating classes similar to the automotive-style hitches in SAE J684, but it does provide a performance test for hitch manufacturers to ensure the pintle hook and corresponding draw bar will perform to their rated test capacities.

    There are other factors to consider when determining actual vehicle maximum towing capacity. For example, coupling system capacity is determined by the weakest component in the system. Components in a conventional towing system include the receiver, draw bar, hitch ball and connecting pin. If the installed hitch is rated at a maximum of 10,000 pounds but the hitch ball is rated for 9,000 pounds, even though the hitch has a higher towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, the maximum trailer towing capacity is limited by the hitch ball’s 9,000-pound rating.

    When determining chassis specifications for towing with a work truck, it’s important to fully understand the end user’s body, equipment and payload needs. When assessing maximum truck towing capacity, it’s also essential to account for correct matching of trailer hitch system components to the desired trailer and payload, since the hitch system can be a limiting factor for safety, durability and customer satisfaction.
