Bed sensor keeps unobtrusive eye on vital signs

May 25 – A bed sensor developed by an Israeli team is proving to be an effective and more reliable alternative to conventional patient monitoring technology. The sensor is designed to unobtrusively monitor a patient’s vital signs from beneath their mattress and is less prone to sending out false alarms to nursing staff. Tara Cleary reports.

A device called EarlySense, placed under mattresses in an Israeli hospital, is helping to ensure that patients’ vital signs are monitored accurately, but unobtrusively.
EarlySense’s CEO, Avner Halperin says the sensor is an effective and safer alternative to conventional monitors which require the attachment of wires to a patient’s skin.
SOUNDBITE: AVNER HALPERIN, EARLYSENSE CEO, SAYING (English):
“It’s based on a sensor, which is this one you see it here, which is placed under the mattress of a bed and monitors the patient continuously without ever touching his body, of heart, respiratory and motion. And gives alerts when the earliest warning signs of deterioration are present. And that makes the nurses and doctors much more effective in intervening early and keeping them out of trouble.”
And Halperin says EarlySense is much less prone than conventional systems to send out false alarms, which over time can desensitise carers to the possibility of a real emergency.
Connected to a bedside computer, the device monitors breathing, heart rate and heavy body movement.

“These three signals go through the mattress, are collected by this passive plaque which is like a passive antenna, digitized and then algorithms that we developed over ten years make that into very accurate vital signs that then are analysed and based on that, when something begins to go wrong, an alert is indicated to the nurse and physicians.”
Anat Margel, a nurse here at the Dorot Geriatric Hospital, says EarlySense has been a lifesaver.

“Two and a half years ago, before we started working with the system, we unfortunately had two incidents of patients that were found dead in their beds. Ever since we’ve been using the system and we monitor the patients, we identify the difficult condition of those patients. We had at least three of four incidents of ventricular fibrillation that the crew literally saved patients’ lives.”
EarlySense costs around $7,000 U.S. dollars and is used in about two dozen hospitals in America.
A sensor for home use is also being developed and Halperin says he’s confident that these devices will significantly reduce patient emergencies, and save lives.

GM says ISS advises against Greenlight share plan, board nominees| Reuters

General Motors Co(GM.N) said on Saturday that proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services has recommended that shareholders vote against a slate of directors proposed by hedge fund Greenlight Capital and reject the hedge fund’s plan to divide GM shares into two classes.

 

The advice from ISS is a setback for Greenlight and its manager David Einhorn. They have said GM shares are undervalued and would be more attractive if the company divided its common stock into shares that pay a dividend and shares that would reflect the automaker’s growth potential.

 

 

Greenlight also has proposed a slate of three candidates for GM’s board of directors.

 

 

On Friday, advisory firm Glass Lewis also advised against Greenlight’s nominees for the automaker’s board and its share split plan.

(NewsUSA) – For college students who aspire to work in financial markets, there is no better way to experience trading than participating in CME Group’s annual Trading Challenge.

This year, students at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., beat out nearly 600 teams to take the top prize in the 14th annual contest — the first time in three years that the winning team was based in the United States.

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.; Columbia University in New York City, N.Y.; Imperial College in London, England; and California University Chico in Chico, Calif., rounded out the top five.

During the four-week competition, students learn hands-on techniques and gain experience that they might not otherwise get by trading up to 10 different CME Group derivatives products from multiple-asset classes on a real-time professional trading platform. Live data and news are also provided to students free of charge.

In addition to the $1500 cash prize awarded to each member of the first-place team, the top five teams receive a cash prize. The top 10 percent of teams are also invited to attend a one-day market education conference in Chicago at CME Group in April.

This year’s competition saw record participation from more than 2,300 students from 35 countries around the world. Students can also try their hand at trading year-round by using CME Group’s Futures Fundamentals site, an innovative resource that offers interactive demonstrations of the role of futures markets in everyday life, along with a trading simulator.

These days, consumers are opting to cut the cable cord and stream their TV live.

According to a study by Deloitte in Nov. 2014, the stronghold that cable, satellite and telecommunications companies have held over TV programming is giving way to subscription streaming services and products that use this platform.

DETROITFord Motor Co (F.N), bolstered by heavy sales to fleet customers, surpassed General Motors Co (GM.N) in U.S. new vehicle sales in May, according to figures reported early Thursday.

 

Ford said May sales rose 2.2 percent from a year ago to 241,126 units. GM sales dropped 1.3 percent to 237,364.

 

GM said it had been trimming sales of heavily discounted vehicles to car rental companies. Such fleet sales made up about 19 percent of its total sales in May.

 

Ford’s fleet sales rose 8.4 percent, representing more than 34 percent of total sales. The industry average is around 20 percent.

 

 

Analysts had expected mixed results for the industry, with sales likely propped up by heavy discounts.

 

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCHA.MI)(FCAU.N) said May sales dipped 0.9 percent to 193,040. Toyota Motor Co’s U.S. sales dropped 0.5 percent to 218,248. Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) said U.S. sales in May rose 3.0 percent, to 137,471.

 

 

After demand fell in March and April, analysts estimated May sales at just over 1.5 million. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales in May was estimated at 16.8 million to 16.9 million vehicles, about the same as April. A year earlier, sales stood at 17.55 million vehicles.

 

Early reports indicated that sales over the three-day Memorial Day weekend were helped by heavy discounts.

 

 

“While demand for new vehicles is still relatively strong, it’s a bit of smoke and mirrors,” said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of industry analysis at Edmunds, the car shopping website.

 

Manufacturers and dealers “really pushed the deals over the holiday weekend to prop up their May numbers,” she said. “Incentives were up sharply, and it seems automakers are putting more cash on the hood to nudge car shoppers to buy versus lease.”

 

General Motors dealers were offering discounts of up to $12,000 on the full-size Chevrolet Silverado pickup, while some dealer discounts on Ford Motor Co’s F-series pickups were more than $10,000 on 2017 models and more than $14,000 on leftover 2016 models. The 2017 model year started eight months ago.

SAN FRANCISCO Uber Technologies Inc said on Tuesday it fired the technology whiz it had hired to lead its self-driving unit, Anthony Levandowski, after he failed to comply with a court order to hand over documents at the center of a legal dispute between Uber and Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Waymo unit.

 

Uber had hoped Levandowski, one the most respected self-driving engineers in Silicon Valley, would help the ride services company catch up to rivals including Waymo, in the race for self-driving technology. Instead the hiring led to a court fight and the threat of criminal charges. Uber replaced him as the head of its self-driving car unit in April before finally making the decision to fire him.

 

Levandowski formerly worked for Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving division, which says he stole trade secrets by downloading more than 14,000 documents before he left. Levandowski is not a defendant, but his actions are at the heart of Alphabet’s lawsuit against Uber.

 

Uber said in a letter to Levandowski filed in federal court on Tuesday that it was firing him because he had not complied with a court order to hand over the documents. (tmsnrt.rs/2rBPNzW)

 

He has declined to cooperate, citing his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself. Levandowski’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

Uber and Alphabet are battling over technology expected to revolutionize the way people use cars. Waymo claims its trade secrets made their way into Uber’s Lidar technology, which bounces light pulses off objects so self-driving cars can “see” the road. Uber denies these claims.

 

Levandowski has 20 days to comply with the court orders, according to the Uber letter.

 

 

Last month, Uber named Eric Meyhofer to replace Levandowski as head of its Advanced Technologies Group. Meyhofer will continue to lead the team, an Uber spokeswoman said via email.

“Over the last few months Uber has provided significant evidence to the court to demonstrate that our self-driving technology has been built independently,” Angela Padilla, Uber’s associate general counsel for employment and litigation, wrote in an email to employees, cited by the Times.

 

An Uber spokeswoman confirmed the letter’s authenticity and said the company has urged Levandowski to “fully cooperate.”

 

 

Waymo has said Levandowski received stock worth more than $250 million for joining Uber, along with his portion of the $680 million that Uber paid last year for Otto, the self-driving truck company he formed after leaving Google. That amount assumes certain targets would be met, and it was not clear how his firing would affect those payments.

 

A source familiar with the matter said Levandowski had not yet vested his Uber shares.

 

LEVANDOWSKI REFUSAL

 

Levandowski, a top engineer on self-driving technology, has turned into a liability for Uber in court. The company has acknowledged that his refusal to testify has hurt its defense efforts. Uber has never denied that he took the Waymo documents.

 

 

Asked last month why Uber did not threaten to fire Levandowski to pressure him into turning over the documents, Uber attorney Arturo Gonzalez told Reuters, “We can fire him but we still don’t get the documents.”

 

Uber had argued that it was acceptable to sideline Levandowski by preventing him from working on Lidar technology, but not firing him. But U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup criticized the company, telling lawyers: “You keep on your payroll someone who took 14,000 documents and is liable to use them.”

 

The judge theorized that Levandowski could have used Waymo’s documents himself even if he did not turn them over to Uber.

 

“What prevented him from bringing a laptop to work every day and consulting the files?” Alsup asked Uber lawyers in April.

 

Uber has been hit by a string of departures of senior executives and other negative news. Earlier this year, Uber was caught using its technology to avoid government regulators. Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick was seen on video berating an Uber driver, and the company also faced accusations of sexual harassment that led to an internal probe led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

 

The Holder report will be shown to the board this week, a source familiar with the matter said, adding that next week, Uber plans to speak with employees about it.

(NewsUSA) – This fall, like clockwork, Apple, Inc. will launch its iPhone 8, with yet another new operating system. Added to the mix will be the launch of Apple Pay Cash and sending money inside its messenger app, also known as Peer to Peer (P2P).

The problem is that millions of Apple and Android users won’t be able to use it.

The reason is that you must have an iPhone 6 or higher to be compatible with iOS11, which means that of the more than 90 million iPhone users in the United States, approximately 55 million will not have access to Apple Pay Cash and P2P.

This gap in service by two of the largest technology companies in the world could send all of the excluded iPhone and Android users to seek an alternative way to send money and have it loaded to a card.

Enter MovoCash, the brainchild of Eric Solis, which has created a payment platform that allows consumers to link their bank accounts to their MovoCash account for mobile payments with no limitation on the number of supported banks.

Unlike Apple Pay or Android Pay, MovoCash eliminates the need for retailers to buy expensive equipment.

“MovoCash is a transformative way to think about payments,” says Eric Solis, CEO and founder of the company.

“It always bugged me that companies like Apple would roll out a product that is so hard to use. You have to have a newer iPhone, you have to have a card that supports Apple Pay, you have to go to a merchant that supports Apple Pay. At the end of the day, so many consumers are locked out of the digital economy. We fixed all of that with MovoCash,” says Eric Solis, founder of the company.

To that point, MovoCash allows users (and even non-users) to send money to a friend instantly. And that friend can then turn around and buy a latte.

Some of the many advantages of Movocash compared to Apple Pay are that:

* Apple Pay can only be used by iPhone owners. With Movo- Cash, you can send money to anyone who has a smart phone.

* Only about 1 in 3 retailers support Apple Pay, while MovoCash is supported by more than 99.9 percent of retailers.

* Apple Pay can be spent where Apple Pay is accepted (usually not online) or sent to your bank. MovoCash, on the other hand, can be spent at nearly 100 percent of merchants. You can also get cash at an ATM, cash back with a purchase, pay bills, send someone a check, or shop online.

Consider this: according to Gartner, Inc., an American research and advisory firm providing information technology-related insight, of the 431 million smart phones sold worldwide in 2016, 352 million were Android devices and 77 million were iPhones. This is important because MovoCash has plans to expand globally.

As for the domestic market, there are 107 million Android smart phones in the United States and 90 million iPhones, of which 55 million are iPhone 5 or older. This means that a total of 142 million smart phone users in the United States will be blocked from using Apple Pay Cash. Alternatively, MovoCash works across all devices and has plans for global expansion.

(NewsUSA) – We’ve heard a lot about “workplace ergonomics” in recent years, but with the economy changing — more people are working from home, whether by choice or their employers’ decisions to “go virtual,” — maybe it’s time to acknowledge the obvious: It’s just as easy to injure yourself no matter where you physically work.

Think about it: When it comes to a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries caused by stress to the joints from repetitive tasks, overuse of muscles and poor posture, what’s the difference if you’re slumping in front of an office computer or a home laptop? Or lifting heavy cartons onto the back of a delivery truck or your closet shelf?

As the Society for Human Resource Management advises: “Employees who work from home or travel for work should be taught to assess their ad-hoc workplaces for ergonomic risks.”

If you are hurting, doctors of chiropractic — who have a minimum of seven years of higher education — focus on structure and function. They care for pain syndromes with a drug-free approach that includes spinal manipulation and exercises to help stretch out and strengthen core muscles. Meanwhile, here’s a few tips to follow:
