Wake Up With Al’s Stephanie Abrams (Weather Channel) introduces Al Rocker (NBC News) and Mike West (Executive Producer, Universal Creative) whom talk about the weather and the opening of the new (2013) Transformers: The Ride 3D at Universal Studios Florida.
“Transformers: The Ride 3D (or simply Transformers: The Ride) is a 3D dark ride located at Universal Studios Singapore, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida. The ride, based on the Transformers film franchise, was designed by Universal Creative, Oceaneering International, and Industrial Light & Magic. Each installation is reported to have cost US$100 million. Universal Studios Singapore was the first to open the ride.
The dark ride consists of motion platform-mounted vehicles which follow a 2,000-foot-long (610 m) track. Throughout the ride, screens up to 60 feet (18 m) high project 3D images of various Transformers characters as the Autobots attempt to protect the AllSpark from the Decepticons.
A few days after Transformers: The Ride opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Parks & Resorts decided to open the attraction at Universal Studios Florida. Construction began almost immediately on the site of Soundstage 44, which was once home of Hercules and Xena: Wizards of the Screen and Murder, She Wrote Mystery Theatre. They were demolished in June 2012. In July 2012, construction of a new building began with the installation of a tower crane and the start of excavation. On May 2, 2013, the park announced that the ride would open on June 20, 2013. On May 30, 2013, technical rehearsals for the ride officially began. On June 20, 2013, the ride officially opened to the general public. Transformers: The Ride 3D celebrated its One-Millionth Rider in August 2013.

The Weather Channel is an American basic cable and satellite television channel, owned by a consortium made up of The Blackstone Group, Bain Capital, and NBCUniversal. Its headquarters are located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Launched on May 2, 1982, the channel broadcasts weather forecasts and weather-related news and analysis, along with documentaries and entertainment programming related to weather. A sister network, Weatherscan, is a digital cable and satellite service that offers 24-hour automated local forecasts and radar imagery.
In addition to its programming on the cable channel, TWC also provided forecasts for terrestrial and satellite radio stations, newspapers and websites, and maintained an extensive online presence at weather.com and through a set of mobile applications for smartphones and tablet computers. These services are now administered by The Weather Channel’s former parent company, The Weather Company, which was sold to IBM in 2016. The Weather Channel continues to license its brand assets and weather data from IBM.
Wake Up with Al was an American morning television program on The Weather Channel. Airing Monday through Fridays live from 5 to 7 a.m. Eastern Time, the program featured a mix of weather forecasts, news headlines and feature segments. The program debuted on July 20, 2009. It was cancelled effective October 2, 2015.” ~ wikipedia.org

Spring is a time of transition from the cold, snowy winter to the hot days of summer. In most parts of the United States, this time of year corresponds to the “rainy season” during which thunderstorms frequently occur. We have all heard that the month of March comes “in like a lion and out like a lamb,” but this is really due to the changeable nature of the weather at this time of year. It is just as likely to be the other way around, with storms occurring at any part of this transition season. Some facts about thunderstorms:
What causes thunderstorms?
Thunderstorms are the result of powerful convection — the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air through dryer, cooler air. As this air moves higher it cools and the moisture condenses forming towering cumulonimbus clouds. Water droplets and ice form and begin falling through the clouds. As they fall, they collide with each other and grow larger. The falling droplets create a downdraft of air that generates the strong winds associated with thunderstorms. The strongest and largest type of thunderstorm is called a supercell.
Where do thunderstorms occur most frequently?
Thunderstorm intensity is related to the contrast in moisture and temperature of adjacent air masses, and this is strongest in mid-latitudes. It is further facilitated by flat open terrain such as that in the Great Plains of the US. This region is known as “Tornado Alley” due to its large number of severe storms, which often spawn tornadoes. As seen in this graphic showing the number of hail days per year, there appears to be a bulls-eye right over the state of Oklahoma. It is no coincidence that this is the location of the National Severe Storms Laboratory!
Are storms happening more often due to climate change?
Many scientists think so. Although any single storm cannot be attributed to climate change, an increasing trend can be. This seeming paradox requires understanding the difference between weather and climate.
How should we prepare for severe storms?
Damage from thunderstorms is mainly from downburst winds, large hailstones, and flash flooding caused by heavy precipitation. Therefore, it is wise to stay indoors and out of low-lying areas. Watch out for downed power lines and trees. Some thunderstorms spawn tornadoes which of course cause more extreme damage from the higher winds in the resulting vortex.
What is a severe thunderstorm watch?
The National Weather Service will issue a severe thunderstorm watch when “conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area”.
What is a severe thunderstorm warning?
The National Weather Service will issue a severe thunderstorm warning when “either a severe thunderstorm is indicated by… radar or a spotter … and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately.”
