Self Help Tips – Spreading the Word About Mayonnaise – Food

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – Traditionally mayonnaise is thought of as something to spread on sandwiches or burgers. It turns out this creamy condiment has more uses and cooking appeal than you may have imagined.

Now, more people are realizing its health-friendly ingredients and versatility as something other than a condiment.

The Association for Dressings and Sauces points to the fact that mayonnaise contains healthy oils, such as soybean and canola, which are natural sources of alpha-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid. In addition to important fatty acids, these oils and the eggs in mayonnaise are also sources of our daily intake of vitamin E.

Further, according to the American Heart Association, omega-3s work to reduce blood pressure and improve overall heart health.

More than just a sandwich spread, here are some other ways to use mayonnaise.

* Use in baking. Mayonnaise contains eggs and oil, which help produce more moist cakes and cookies. Mayonnaise adds a moist texture and rich flavor to baked goods, and it’s a worthy substitute when you’re out of eggs.

* Use for grilling. You can brush it on while grilling fish, chicken or corn on the cob.

* Use in cold salads. Mayonnaise is the base of egg salad, potato salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, pasta salad and coleslaw.

* Use to make sauces. Why not try your hand at making a homemade tartar sauce for your fish?

* Spice it up. Try adding some herbs to your mayo to give a pop to your sandwich by adding extras such as curry powder, gherkins, capers, or any other spices that strike your fancy.

Self Help Tips – Post-Hurricane Matthew: How to Prepare Your Home for Storms – Home

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored by GAF – Risk mitigation.

It’s a phrase that comes up after every major storm — Hurricane Matthew being only the latest — as homeowners are warned that all too many houses are simply no match for high winds, and that prudence dictates they act to help protect themselves and their property from future storms.

Think those warnings are needlessly alarmist?

Probably so did all those New Yorkers who believed that a Hurricane Sandy could never clobber their city.

So what should homeowners do, proactively, to increase their odds of beating Mother Nature? Read on.

* Clean your gutters. Even in perfect weather, Angie’s List says you’re looking at a potential “nightmare” if they’re so clogged with mounds of leaves, sticks, and other debris that it causes your roof to leak. Factor in a hurricane-strength rainstorm, though, and the very roofing system component meant to control the flow of all that water — thereby protecting your roof, walls, foundation, and landscape from flooding — can suddenly be rendered about as useful as a virus-infected laptop.

“If you let gutter cleaning go by the wayside, it can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars,” the website cautions.

* Reinforce windows. Need we say anything more than flying shards of glass?

Didn’t think so, which is why the Federal Emergency Management Agency — in describing windows as “particularly vulnerable” — recommends springing for either impact-resistant glazing or permanent storm shutters. (A grief-saving tip from FEMA: “Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.”)

* Make sure your roof is in good condition. Even though a manufacturer’s warranty typically doesn’t cover roof damage caused by disasters like hurricanes — check your home insurance policy for that — experts date what they call an “upsurge” of interest in stronger roofs back to 2011’s Hurricane Irene. News footage of all those battered homes in states such as Delaware, North Carolina and Virginia was that gut-wrenching.

“If you are going to replace your roof, consider shingles that have passed the UL2218, Class 4 impact test, the toughest in the industry,” says Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence. Joplin especially likes the Timberline ArmorShield II line of shingles from GAF (gaf.com), North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, which — in addition to looking good — are made with what he describes as “a rubber-like material for enhanced flexibility and durability during extreme weather conditions.”

Added bonus: Depending on where you live, the shingles may also qualify for significant discounts on that homeowners insurance of yours.

* Trim weak tree branches. Not to belabor the dangerous projectile angle, but ask yourself this: Unless you’re 5 years old, would you want even Santa Claus crashing into your house at hurricane-strength speeds?

And while you’re mulling that one over, remember that Matthew might not be it for this year. Both the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricane seasons run through November 30.

What is a Nervous Breakdown and How Do You Fix It

We’ve all heard the expression, “nervous breakdown”, but what does that mean, exactly?

First off, what makes people think they are having a nervous breakdown? Is it the moment they feel they have lost all ability to cope with their lives and all the stresses that come with it?

What are the symptoms they are experiencing at that time? Probably the most prominent is their minds are spinning. Self Help Tips – Ladder Safety Should Be Tops for Home Improvers – Home – #SelfHelp #Tips

heavy construction news

(NewsUSA) -As the warm weather of spring and summer arrives, ambitious and well-intentioned homeowners embark on cleaning, maintenance, and improvement projects that often involve roofs, gutters, and ladders. However, working on a ladder can be dangerous.

Consider this: every year, approximately 164,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States because of ladder accidents, according to data from the World Health Organization.

Underscoring the fact that lack of knowledge about ladder safety is a growing problem are recent survey results published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine which found that the number of ladder-related injuries in the United States has increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years.

Professionals and nonprofessionals alike can benefit by keeping some safety tips in mind, courtesy of the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

-Stand firm. When positioning a ladder anywhere around your home, be sure to place it level on firm ground.

-Have a partner, but go solo. When climbing a ladder, have another person with you to hold the lower end for extra safety and support. However, only one person at a time should be on a ladder so it doesn’t become top-heavy and fall over.

-Don’t go to the top. Never stand on the top rung of a ladder, and don’t reach from a ladder. Instead, climb down and move the ladder to the location of your choice.

-Watch for doors. Never place a ladder near a door that can be opened; an unexpected exit could lead to a ladder accident.

-Be shoe smart. Wear shoes with clean, dry soles when working on ladders. Avoid sandals or flip flops.

Most importantly, don’t forget the rule of three: According to the American Ladder Institute, the “Three Points of Contact” rule means keeping either two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand in contact with the steps, rungs, or side rails of a ladder at all times to reduce chances of a slip or fall.

Gutter cleaning and maintenance are among the highest risk activities for ladder injuries. One option to reduce the risk is to install rain dispersal gutters that don’t require routine cleaning.

Products such as the Rainhandler Rain Dispersal system are engineered to keep leaves and debris out of gutters.

Visit www.rainhandler.com for more information about how the right gutter management can simplify home maintenance.

Self Help Tips – How to Prevent Mosquito Bites – Human_Interest

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – Across the country, families are taking advantage of the warmer weather by spending more quality time outdoors. This year, as families prepare to host a variety of outdoor gatherings, mosquito prevention and protecting against mosquito bites should be top of mind.

Mosquitoes transmit numerous diseases and are often described as one of the deadliest animals on the planet. This year, the Zika virus has made the mainstream news and has become a cause for public concern, especially for women who are or planning to become pregnant. As it is unknown how Zika will spread, particularly in the U.S., practicing caution is warranted.

“Proactivity and public cooperation are huge components of mosquito prevention,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs at the National Pest Management Association. “Homeowners play an important role in helping to reduce mosquito populations and can work to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds throughout the season.”

Fortunately, there are several important measures the American public can take in protecting against the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. The NPMA is urging homeowners to help in eliminate mosquito breeding grounds on their properties and practice vigilance in wearing proper attire to protect against bites:

* Remove all sources of stagnant water. Standing water can be found in areas such as gutters, buckets, flowerpots and bird baths. Mosquitoes only need 1/2 inch of standing water to breed, so it is essential to minimize these areas to reduce offspring.

* Wear an insect repellent containing DEET or another EPA-registered ingredient to help prevent mosquito bites. The NPMA, in partnership with the CDC, developed an instructional video on how to properly apply insect repellent.

* Minimize outside activity between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Also take proactive measures during the day to protect against daytime biters like the Asian tiger mosquito, the main carrier of Zika.

* When outdoors, wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes.

* When hosting guests outside, keep the air moving. Using a fan where you and your guests may lounge makes it less likely mosquitoes will land on you. These pests are not strong fliers, so circulating air can make an outside gathering more pleasant.

By following these tips and actively working to prevent mosquitoes on the home front, you will help reduce the risk of you and your family getting bitten by mosquitoes this season.

Self Help Tips – How to Select Interior Finishings for Your Home – Home

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – When building or renovating a home, the use of interior finishings can help create a finished and unique look . Interior finishings can include trim or moulding, wall treatments, interior doors, posts and columns, stairway systems, and ceiling treatments. Here are some tips and tricks from interior design experts at Metrie to help you choose the best interior finishings based on your style and home:

* STYLE: There are endless options when it comes to moulding profiles. It’s important to consider the style of your home, both inside and out when selecting the right moulding, along with the lifestyle, personalities and design preferences of those living in the home. Metrie has a fantastic online resource at Metrie.com called Room Styler to help guide the selection process.

* TYPE: Primary trim is used in most home installations and includes baseboard, casings and crown mouldings. They are the most functional trim elements and help set the tone of a room. Design enhancing trim such as chair rail, panel moulding and architraves add extra dimension and flair to any room. Ornamental trim, a decorative trim, helps warm up a space; corner blocks, plinth blocks, rosettes and Ikons are part of this category. To help ease the chaos of choice, Metrie has designed the Then & Now Finishing Collections, the industry’s first coordinated finishing elements consisting of moulding, trim and interior doors sized and proportioned to fit together with ease and precision.

* MATERIAL: Choose a material based on application and the finished result desired — options can range from solid wood species, to MDF to faux wood and flexible moulding options.

* SIZE: The choice should be based largely on the ceiling height of the room. In many cases, there are complementary profiles that can be used in a home with varying ceiling heights. The size may vary, but the style should remain consistent room to room.

* APPLICATION: Trim can be used in a number of non-traditional ways, such as creating door headers, wall treatments or frames, and can be layered or built-up for a unique or custom look. Planning the design in advance can ensure that all of the necessary products are ordered at one time, reducing down time in the project.

Self Help Tips – How to Make the World a Better Place – Environment

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – Each morning is the beginning of a new day and another chance to make the world a better place. Think your actions don’t make a difference? Think again!

Taking small, mindful actions for positive improvement can have a great impact on your community and inspire others to do the same. There are so many opportunities to do good for the planet, and many of them are right under your nose.

Here are three ways you can do your part to make the world a better place…all before 10 a.m.

* Concentrate on your morning routine. So much of what we do in the morning can be condensed to consume less and do much more. Try to reduce your water usage by shortening your shower time and don’t let it run while you brush your teeth. Make your own coffee and lunch to cut down on food packaging waste. Carpool to put fewer vehicles on the road and get to know your co-workers.

* Engage in “mindful” acts of kindness. Make it a point to hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your co-worker’s outfit or new hairstyle, or buy a snack for the person behind you in line. To be kind is an act of solidarity, and doing good for others will inspire members of your community to do the same. Kindness is the currency of change: spend wisely and often.

* Learn about new ways to recycle. Did you know that Malt-O-Meal cereal bags can be recycled through a free program in partnership with TerraCycle, a New Jersey-based recycling company? To begin with, Malt-O-Meal bagged cereal creates 75 percent less packaging waste than boxed cereal with a bag inside. Through the MOM Brands Cereal Bag Recycling Program, you can ensure that none of it ends up in the landfill and raise money for charity at the same time!

Self Help Tips – Lighting Tips to Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space – Home

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – Summer is in full swing, but it’s not too late to plan a relaxing staycation or backyard social gathering while the evenings are warm and clear. To make the most of your family and friends’ time, look around your outdoor space to see if the existing lighting works properly and enhances the ambiance.

According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), a few updates to your outside lighting can make your outdoor time more enjoyable. And the best part:It does not have to be complicated or costly to transform your existing patio, deck or pool area into a lovely retreat.

“Creating a beautiful landscape doesn’t have to be expensive,” says Rick Wiedemer of Hinkley Lighting. “A few well-placed, low-voltage path or accent lights can make a huge impact on a well-manicured landscape.” No lawn is too small. “Even modest homes or those with limited yards or gardens can benefit,” he says.

A few outdoor lighting tips:

Layer outdoor lighting. Just like indoor lighting, outdoor lighting is most effective if it utilizes overhead, task and ambient light sources. Even outdoors, where there are not typically boundaries and borders, those three layers will enhance enjoyment and help define smaller sitting and entertaining areas as though they are outdoor rooms.

Create a safe and secure environment. Enhance security with lighting near entrances and in dark corners. Aim lights away from the door so as not to blind anyone as they enter your outdoor area.

Reduce glare. Light walkways and paths with light that is cast downward and fixtures that are hooded. In many cases, exterior-safe dimmers and movable fixtures, which can be added to a patio or porch as needed, can provide flexible control over the level of light.

Add decorative elements. While functionality is the top priority, aesthetic elements are important for a relaxing and inspiring setting. Focus on lighting that highlights architectural and natural details, as well as other decorative elements like arbors, pergolas, patios, etc.

Conserve energy. Consider LEDs for their efficiency. Also think about Energy Star and Dark Sky fixtures that reduce glare and minimize light into the sky as well as neighboring yards and windows. Remember to check the color (chromaticity) of LED outdoor lights. Low chromaticity lights (2700 or 3000K) will look similar to incandescent and halogen bulbs. Higher chromaticity LEDs (4000K and above) will have a whiter, bluer look.

Visit a nearby ALA-member retail store to see the latest outdoor lighting options to make your outdoor space a true oasis. For more, go to americanlightingassoc.com.

Self Help Tips – How to Build Better, Stronger Bones in Kids – Health

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored News – It’s been ingrained in our heads since we were little: building strong bones is important. The problem is that these days many children aren’t getting the daily recommended diet and exercise needed to do so. And, with technology use at an all-time high, children are spending less time playing outdoors, which increases the risk of obesity.

Today, approximately 32 percent of American children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 are considered overweight or obese. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) wants to help empower families to get up, get out and get moving to ensure optimal bone growth and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and other diseases later in life.

“Building your child’s bone bank is like a college savings plan: the earlier you start investing, the better,” says AAOS spokesperson Dr. Jennifer Weiss, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. “Parents should ensure that kids are getting adequate calcium to keep their bones strong as well as appropriate levels of vitamins D and C to allow the body to absorb the calcium.”

So what’s a parent to do? The following tips from the AAOS will help get your kids (and you) moving while building better, stronger bones:

* Move it. Make physical activity a part of a child’s schedule for at least 30 to 60 minutes per day. Make it fun. With fall weather coming in, walking around the block to see the colors, throwing a football in the yard, or riding a bike is a perfect way to engage with your kids and still get in some exercise. Bonus? Being outside gets you and the kids some much-needed vitamin D, which also helps build strong bones.

* Watch what you eat. Life is busy. Which makes on-the-run snacks and meals an easy fix for harried parents. Unfortunately, most of this kind of food does not have the nutrients to ensure good bone health. Adolescents should consume a healthy diet with calcium to maintain strong bones and lower the risk of excessive weight gain.

* Lift things up, and put them down. Studies show that strength training is key to healthy bones. During resistance training, muscles have to work harder and, over time, become stronger. Although resistance exercises focus on increasing muscle mass, they also put stress on bones and have bone-building capacity.

* Set limits. It’s understandable that kids’ whims change with the seasons, as do the number of teams they want to play on. However, try to limit the number of teams a child plays on in one season to avoid overuse injuries. In addition, if your child tells you that something hurts, discourage him or her from playing through the pain.

Self Help Tips – 5 Tips for Perfect Wedding Photos – Human_Interest

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion — something to be celebrated and cherished. Planning it, on the other hand, can feel as if you’re preparing for war — between ensuring that Uncle Sal isn’t sitting next to his brother, who owes him money, to budgeting for everything you want and need. The one thing you don’t want to skimp on is the memories.

Which is why choosing your photographer is one of the biggest decisions you will make. To help ensure that you get the most romantic photos of your fairytale day, Professional Photographers of America, a 29,000-plus-member association, offers these suggestions:

* Express yourself. What kind of photos do you like? Do they tend toward the journalistic or is your style more whimsical, classical, or romantic? Whatever your style, be clear with your photographer so that he or she can capture your personality.

* Say yes to the dress. It starts and ends with this iconic garment. What will make you feel like the bride you’ve always dreamed of being? Is it a flowing sundress, a formal gown complete with train and veil? Or maybe your idea is more modern and it’s a strapless dress, in a color other than white. Whatever it is, dare to wear your dream dress.

* Buy the shoes?or not. Carrie Bradshaw knows shoes. And you should too. Will you walk down the aisle in stilettos or kitten heels? Maybe cowboy boots are more your style? Can’t decide? Then leave the shoes at home, and feel free to walk barefoot.

* Rejoice in style. Your wedding day isn’t just a ceremony, it’s a celebration that brings all your family and friends together (for better or worse), and pictures of this memorable party are a great way to inject your own sense of style. Be it a backyard BBQ, a tail gate at your favorite stadium, or a formal dinner, pictures of this event are a must-have.

* Decide on your ride. Some people prefer to be whisked away by horse and carriage as if they were Cinderella herself. Others prefer luxury limos and cars as their modern equivalent. For the unique free-spirits of the world, maybe a motorcycle is more your thing. Either way, a great photo opp awaits as you leave your wedding.
