Self Help Tips – Parents Get Help Coaching Teen Drivers from Michelin, NFL Star – Auto – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) -; As a parent, there is no shortage of things to worry about when it comes to your kids. If you have teenagers, that anxiety can rise even more, especially when they start to drive.

Car crashes remain the top killer of teenagers in the United States, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

To bring awareness of teen driver safety among teens and parents, top tire manufacturer Michelin has teamed up with football legend -; father of a teen driver -; Emmitt Smith in an educational campaign, “Coaching Your Teen Driver.”

“As parents, we play a critical role in coaching our teens to be safe drivers,” Smith says in a statement announcing the campaign in conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety Week.

“Keeping a cool head on the road starts with a strategy and a plan -; that’s where Michelin’s resources for coaching your teen driver can help.”

The campaign features a downloadable handbook that includes practical road safety advice for coaches and trainees, as well as a series of “offensive” and “defensive” driving plays to master with your teen driver.

Offense: The handbook’s offensive driving plays are designed to build new drivers’ confidence on the road. Offensive plays include adjusting mirrors for maximum visibility, as well as changing lanes, passing other cars and merging smoothly onto highways safely and with confidence.

Defense: Defensive driving maneuvers are essential for safety on the road. The handbook reinforces key defensive driving plays, such as how to manage tailgaters, drive safely near large trucks, keep a safe following distance and respond to changes in road conditions due to weather or other factors.”

The handbook also emphasizes critical tips for coaches -; such as knowing when to call a “time out” and pull over when stress levels rise, and the importance of conducting a “post-game analysis” with your teen after the driving lesson to review what went well and where they can still improve.

In addition, a section on basic vehicle and tire maintenance includes information that teens should know to stay safe on the road, but that often are not taught in drivers’ education classes.

“Sharing even simple tips with teens, like how to maintain tires, could result in a few extra feet of stopping distance that could mean the difference between life and death,” Scott Clark, chief operating officer for Michelin North America says in the statement.

Self Help Tips – How to Increase Your Savings on Your Terms – Business – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) – “You need to save money.” You tell yourself this. Others tell you this too. However, according to the 2015 FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households*, approximately nine million U.S. households don’t use any type of bank account to save their money. Since banks tend to offer similar products and services, even those who do save often don’t see a need to explore their options. Understanding the ins and outs of saving for the future is the first step to becoming a successful saver.

It’s important to note that all savings accounts are not created equal. Online bank accounts often offer higher yields than traditional bank branches, with savings account interest rates and certificate of deposit (CD) interest rates that are higher than the national average annual percentage yield (APY).

For instance, Goldman Sachs Bank USA (GS Bank) empowers consumers to save by offering a high yield savings account and CDs to help achieve savings goals, while at the same time providing the convenience and the security of a traditional bank. Additional advantages include no minimum deposit required to open an account, no transactions fees and only a $1 balance required to earn the APY associated with an account. With the backing of Goldman Sachs, GS Bank customers have access to a range of savings products that will help them save, as well as the expertise of a 148-year-old financial institution.

Digital alternatives to traditional banking don’t have the overhead that comes with managing branches and are therefore able to be more competitive with their rates, providing consumers with a realistic way to accumulate savings with higher interest rates and a stronger financial portfolio.

Accumulating savings can be difficult at any age. Here are some small steps that can make a big difference in the long run:

Make a budget: If you don’t know what you’re spending each month, start paying attention. Track your spending for a few months and make a budget to live by. Track the money you save by eliminating unnecessary spending and put it right into your online savings account.

Split-deposit paychecks: Consider having your employer split-deposit your paycheck to your checking account and a separate high-yield savings account. This way, saving becomes automatic and because your savings account is separate, you might be less tempted to spend it.

Manage spending: For instance, you could save money by bringing your lunch. If, for example, you average $8 a day for lunch at work, that’s $40 per week and $2,000 per year. It adds up. If you were to bring your lunch from home for about $2 per day, you could achieve a savings of $1,500 per year to add to your savings account. Homemade sandwiches taste pretty good when you’re watching your savings grow.

Sock your money away: Once you accumulate significant savings, you may want to move some of your savings to an FDIC-insured fixed-rate CD account to lock in an interest rate. A CD is a type of savings tool that offers a higher rate than most standard savings accounts. Generally, there is little risk and most typically don’t have monthly fees.

Keep your savings safe and secure: Consider keeping all or a portion of your core savings in an FDIC-insured bank. This can mean keeping your money in savings or CD accounts that are insured by the FDIC up to the maximum allowed by law. According to the FDIC**, since the FDIC was established in 1933, no depositor has lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds. For more information about FDIC deposit insurance coverage and limits, visit FDIC.gov/deposit.

As you work towards achieving your savings goals, you can learn more about savings strategies and financial insights from GS Bank by visiting www.GSBank.com. Have additional questions? You’ll find someone to connect with at 1-855-730-SAVE (7283). Start saving more right now to make a difference for your future.

Self Help Tips – Summer’s End: The Perfect Time to Get Financially Organized – Money – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) – Couldn’t find that birth certificate when you needed it? Or maybe it was your tax records for the last seven years that the IRS refused to believe really did get lost in a move?

As you recall the initial panic — and subsequent fury if also forced to navigate some government bureaucracy for copies –think about whether it’s finally time to keep your promise about organizing your important financial and family documents. After all, it’s summer, and a person can only stand so much sun and sand while waiting to see which TV show from the new fall line-up gets cancelled first.

And if you are going to get organized, you need to decide whether you’re ready to embrace the 21st century (in much the same way you did now-ubiquitous smartphones) or stick to the more “vintage” practice of paying for either a bank security box or a locked fireproof box kept in your closet.

That said, know that even before Fidelity Investments officially introduced it a year ago, Barron’s magazine gave the free, online storage service FidSafe — Get it? “Fid Safe” — five stars for being what it called “the first cloud-based safe deposit box we’ve seen that’s secure enough to organize everything from financial statements, insurance policies, and real estate records to a will, IRA beneficiaries, and even passwords.”

No, you don’t have to be a Fidelity customer to use it. However, your approach to getting things in order should be the same no matter how you store things:

* Start by identifying the documents you need to keep, which can be a cleansing experience unto itself.

* Separate them by category. While you might not need all 10 of the ones some experts suggest, adding things like “medical history” and “legal documents” to more obvious financial topics could be a good starting point.

* Tell a trusted family member or friend where everything is. “Having an effective system in place cannot exist in a vacuum,” notes Andrew Peterson, FidSafe’s vice president and product manager.

Security-wise, FidSafe stands out because of its end-to-end encryption — meaning, your documents are scrambled both in transit, while uploading them, and on the site’s servers — as well as its log-in protections.

That alone is pretty 21st century. You also get up to 5GB of storage, which is enough to handle a heck of a lot of material (including video of home upgrades, say, you want to memorialize for insurance purposes). And you can even add trusted contacts like family and advisors to share specific documents with.

Of course, if you’re not interested in being able to access your information anywhere via a web browser or iOS app, there’s always that fireproof box in your closet.

But then, unlike FidSafe, the box won’t automatically transfer your documents to a designee of your choice after your death so that loved ones are spared the trauma that FidSafe’s developer has been quoted saying he strove to prevent: “People shared stories like, ‘My dad died, and my mom doesn’t know where anything is,’ and vice versa.”

Self Help Tips – Avoiding Scammers: 5 Tips for Hiring a Roofing Contractor – Home – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored by GAF – It’s the biggest con being played on homeowners, according to the Better Business Bureau’s new Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report.

Some guy knocks on your door claiming to have extra roofing material left over from a nearby job, and offers to fix yours for bupkis.

And you know what you get for bupkis, right?

Invariably, the scammer — who especially loves showing up in areas recovering from major storms — takes the money and runs after doing little or no work.

“You always try to give people the benefit of the doubt,” the Bureau’s Felicia Thompson told a local CBS TV station in Arizona. “Not everybody’s bad, but nowadays you just can’t do that.”

No, you can’t. And now that you’ve been forewarned about this particular swindle, read on to learn how to choose the right (reputable) contractor to repair or replace your own roof.

* Make certain they’re insured. If there’s one thing that’s non-negotiable it’s that the contractor carry insurance for all employees and subcontractors — and provide a copy of their certificate for your inspection.

“Actually call the insurance carrier to confirm that they are valid,” Angie’s List advises.

* Run if they suggest this. Did the contractor vying for your business really just claim to be able to handle a storm-related repair, say, without you paying your required insurance deductible? There’s a name for that: insurance fraud, which you want no part of.

* Run even faster if they suggest this. While it’s reasonable for contractors to request a modest down payment before work begins — call it “earnest money” — beware if the figure exceeds 20 percent of the bill’s projected total cost. Should they start talking 50 or even 75 percent, though. . .

“The red flags of possible fraud are fluttering,” the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud’s James Quiggle has warned.

* Know your contractor. When it comes to peace of mind, hiring a contractor who’s a member of a reputable roofing manufacturer’s contractor program is helpful. But certification alone may not tell the whole story. GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, for example, is exceptionally strict about who it designates as its highest-ranking “Master Elite Contractors” — less than 2 percent of roofing contractors have qualified — and you can find one in your area through a quick search on the gaf.com website.

“We have a full vetting process we go through to determine whether they’re the right contractors to put in our program, like making sure they’re licensed and insured where required, and have a history of installing roofs in the local community,” says Jim Slauson, GAF’s vice president of certification program and services.

* Communication skills matter. A knowledgeable contractor will present a range of roofing shingle and accessory options by price, style and color. Balking at running through them with you is a bad sign.

Oh, and about that Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report. Guess who’s “most susceptible,” as the Bureau delicately put it, to home improvement scams in general? Men aged 55-64.

Now you’re doubly forewarned.

Self Help Tips – Storm Doors: Advantages and Tips for Your Home – Home – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) – The versatility of a storm door to transform your home and your comfort level, between the warm and cold months throughout the year, earns it a spot on most homeowners’ project lists.

Each season brings out something new from a storm door, and yet many consumers struggle with the benefits of and tips for buying a storm door.

Advantages

* A Warm Welcome. Setting the tone of your home with the entryway is essential. Storm doors create a better first impression for guests and make your home feel warm and inviting. With the entry door open, natural light can create a bright and welcoming space for you and your guests.

* Better Air Circulation. This is one of the transformative features of a storm door. In the warmer months, it can become a screen door. Many storm doors feature either full- or half-glass panels that can be switched out with a screen at any time. Some doors, such as the Rolscreen Storm Door from Pella, feature hidden screens that are simply pulled into place when needed.

* Exterior Door Protection. A storm door can help protect your front entry door from rain, ice, and snow. And it can help protect your entry door investment and maintain curb appeal.

* Improved Energy Efficiency.

Storm doors can help reduce energy loss by providing a buffer against summer heat and winter cold. With a storm door, the other systems in the home, such as the heater or air conditioner, don’t need to work as hard.

Tips

* Sizes & Configurations. Ensure that you are getting the right size by measuring the opening for the storm door — between the door jambs, not the door itself. Most screen doors come in standard door widths of 30, 32, 34, and 36 inches and may be hinged on either side. But some can be specially designed to open to the right or left. Be attentive of the way the entry door opens.

* Designs. Want to see the whole entry door? Want a retractable screen or a screen that is removed every winter? With updated hardware styles, beautiful glass designs, including Low-E options, retractable screens and assorted colors to choose from, you can keep the architectural aesthetic as well as your functional goals in mind when shopping.

Self Help Tips – 7 Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency – Home – #SelfHelp #Tips

(NewsUSA) – With Old Man Winter just around the corner, now is the time for homeowners to start considering how to make their abode more energy-efficient.

After all, an energy-efficient home not only saves money, it improves the comfort of the home environment.

Follow these tips by Johns Manville to ensure that your house is energy-efficient this winter, and always:

1. Think Energy Savings. Keeping the cool air in during summer and warm air in during winter will require less energy if your home is well-insulated. An energy audit can help you assess your home’s efficiency and provide direction to improve that efficiency.

2. When an Audit Is a Good Thing. An energy audit includes checking for air leaks; inspecting heating and cooling equipment; checking light fixtures, appliances and electronics; and assessing insulation. It will help determine if your home is under-insulated or just not insulated properly, as is the case in many older homes. Each scenario can be easily remedied by adding more insulation or replacing the existing insulation, depending on the situation. For additional savings on energy upgrades, visit www.JM.com/rebatefinder to find tax incentives or rebates in your area.

3. Reach Your R-Value. R-Value is used to measure insulation performance — the higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power. Factors that are considered in calculating R-Value include what part of the home you’re assessing (walls, attic, floor or ceiling) and where you live. Use the R-Value map found on the Johns Manville website (jm.com) to calculate the R-Value your home needs for ultimate energy efficiency.

4. Boost Real Estate Value.

Investing in your home to increase its real estate value involves more than improving curb appeal. Increasing the R-Value of your home’s insulation will help lower your energy costs, saving you money for as long as you live there. Plus, it will be a major selling point should you ever decide to move.

5. Replacement vs. Improvement Options. When your heating and cooling system isn’t doing the job, it’s easy to look at unit or window replacement as the answer. However, many times air temperature problems can be remedied in a less costly manner by conducting an energy audit and making the necessary changes to ensure that the walls, attic and ceiling insulation R-Values are up to par.

6. Protect Expensive Equipment. In extreme temperatures — whether in winter or summer — your heating and cooling systems are working extra hard to keep air temperature at ideal levels. An up-to-date R-Value will help reduce heating and cooling outputs, and can also extend the life of expensive heating and cooling equipment.

7. Do It Yourself: Insulation Is Easier Than You Think. Nearly any home insulation project can be accomplished with your own two hands and the right tools.

Get started by visiting www.jm.com/diyvideos for tips, advice, and videos on a range of home insulation solutions.

3 tips to protect your great Business Idea

self help tips for business

How to Protect Your New Business Idea
Pitching a new business idea can be very nerve wracking. You don’t know how it will go and what people will think of it. And probably the worst thing you could have happen is having your idea stolen. With the three steps given below, you can help prevent this from happening. You should know that legal protection falls into three different categories: copyrights, trademarks, and patents.

1. Copyrights

This type of legal protection covers any of your artistic and musical ideas including but not limited to songs, paintings, photographs, and books. Copyright protection is put into place when an original piece of work is set into tangible form, meaning that you must be able to prove that you came up with the idea. Once this is accomplished, you have the legal right to produce your work.

If you live in the U.S., you’ll notice that there is no requirement to register your idea. However, if you do have it registered, there are benefits to doing this. Once registered, you have a public record of your copyright which can help you with any infringement claims.

The registration process is different according to the type of material created, but it always involves a processing fee and sending in a copy of your work. The copyright time varies too, but usually it lasts for the duration of the creator’s life plus an extra 70 years.

2. Trademarks

Trademarks apply to names, symbols, and words that identify and represent a company or a product. Similar to copyrights, you do not have to register your idea for protection. Also like copyrights, you get benefits if you do register your idea.

When you register, the public is aware that you own the mark. The law will then see that it is your idea and you gain the right to use the registered mark. This means that people cannot then use a similar mark to your own.

If you do decide to register your idea, it’s important that you get your application done professionally, particularly when registering for a trademark as it is more intricate. Getting approval of a trademark has been known to take months, even years.

3. Patents

Patents protect the inventor’s rights to their inventions. Inventions protected by patents can range from machines to plants. Unlike copyrights and trademarks, you must register your idea for protection. Getting a patent can be very time-consuming as it can take years to approve. It can also be very costly, with amounts going up to six figures.

While it may take years for your patent to be approved, you get protection as soon as you apply. A patent lasts for 20 years and you have the right to exclude others from making, selling, and using your invention in the U.S.

Some ideas may require that you have a combination of protection. Remember, if you ever run into an issue of dispute about your idea, ensure that you have early drafts of your idea and detailed records of the development of your idea to prove that it’s yours.

Self Help Tips – Sauces for the Win: Why They’re A Hit At A Party – Human Interest – #SelfHelp #Tips

heavy construction news

(NewsUSA) – It’s that time of year again–the time when families and friends come together to celebrate with food and open arms. That’s right, it’s almost playoff season, with football, basketball, and hockey playoffs all just around the corner.

With these highly anticipated games come the equally anticipated snacks–from chips and dip to wings and hot sauce. In fact, a lot can be said from people’s usage of dips and sauces, and that usage has increased over the past year.

According to a survey by the Association for Dressings & Sauces, the reasons for using dips and sauces more often include: making more or new foods that need them, using them on more foods or as a healthy option with healthy foods, and cooking or eating at home more. So satisfy your craving for the perfect mid-game snack and bring them to parties in new and creative ways.

Here are a couple of tips that will help you pick the perfect recipe for your friends:

* Survey results show that Asian sauces, horseradish, hot and Mexican sauces are more popular than they were last year, with hot sauce and mustard being used several times a week by the majority of respondents. So go exotic and use bold flavors in your dishes!

* Geography also has something to say about what you should bring to a gathering. People in the Northeast reported a greater affinity for horseradish. Folks in the Midwest loves barbecue sauces. Asian sauces and hummus are more popular in the West and the South is all about hot sauce.

Self Help Tips – Deciding What to Do With Your Old 401(k) – Money

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Just started a new job with an employer who thinks you’re as visionary as Steve Jobs? Or maybe you’re between gigs and “exploring other opportunities.” Either way, you need to decide what to do with your old 401(k).

It’s been estimated that there are about 15 million such accounts left behind by former employees, mainly because of either inertia or plain confusion over strict rules for moving the money. And since the IRS doesn’t allow procrastinating on a key decision — if you withdraw even a dime, you’ve got just 60 days to reallocate into a different tax-advantaged account — here’s a rundown of your options to avoid what could be a costly mistake:

* Option No. 1: Cash Out

Unless you’re in dire financial straits and really, really need the bucks to live off, the consensus is this is a bad idea.

“Cashing out comes with an immediate price, both in terms of giving up potential future gains in your portfolio and in the IRS taxes the company handling your 401(k) for your former employer is legally obliged to withhold,” explains Nupur Bahal, vice president for retirement at Fidelity Investments. “That’s money you won’t have for retirement.”

Yes, the government must have its cut. Specifically, 20 percent in federal income taxes, 10 percent in an “early-withdrawal penalty” for those under age 59?, and — wait, we’re not done yet — whatever additional percentage your individual state may or may not assess.

Translating that into real money, Fidelity’s website (fidelity.com) uses the hypothetical example of a 36-year-old who decides to cash out the $16,000 balance in her account. After deducting just the federal taxes and penalties, she’d be left with only $11,200.

Feel free to imagine how much you’d be out if your account is fatter.

* Option No. 2: Move the Money to Your New Employer’s Plan

Doing what’s called a “rollover” is an easy way to keep your 401(k) savings together and growing tax-deferred.

But bear in mind: Investment options vary from plan to plan — as do fees. (And not all employers even accept rollovers.)

Which means you might want to do some comparison shopping before committing.

* Option No. 3: Move the Money Into an IRA

As with the previous rollover, you get to avoid the tax bite of cashing out. The difference here, though -; and these could be major plusses — is that not only do IRAs offer more investment choices than the typical 401(k), but you’re also able to make penalty-free withdrawals for qualified education expenses or up to $10,000 for a first-time home purchase.

“Especially if you already have other, non-401(k) accounts elsewhere, it may be simpler and more effective to consolidate everything under one roof,” says Bahal.

* Option No. 4: Leave It With Your Ex-Employer

Penalty-free withdrawals are allowed for those who leave their jobs at age 55 or older — as opposed to 59? for IRAs — and unique investment options might warrant just letting things ride. But some people forget the account exists with the passage of time — no, really — and further contributions are verboten.

Whatever you decide, remember the clock is definitely ticking for you to contact your old 401(k) administrator should you choose to withdraw even that one dime.

Self Help Tips – Summer Snack Hacks: Three Creative Tips for Simple Summer Snacking – Food

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – School’s out for the summer, which means family fun time and hungry kids home all day. From camp lunches to days by the pool — and all of those lazy days in between — kids have one thing on their minds: snacks. To assemble the perfect snack and keep kids satisfied and smiling throughout the warmer months, follow this simple guide.

* Involve Kids in the Kitchen: All those years of cooking for the kids will soon come to an end when you enlist them as mini-master sous chefs. Whether your kids are two or 10, they’ll love learning and creating their own concoctions. Fruit skewers made from fresh fruit and toothpicks or straws make for the perfect teaching opportunity. Have your kids rinse strawberries, grapes and any other desired fruit, and slide them onto a colorful straw. For a frozen treat to beat the summer heat, pop them in the freezer for a few minutes before watching your kids enjoy their own creative snack creations.

* Colorful Creations: Hungry kids are grumpy kids, and grumpy kids tend to be unhappy. The best way to keep your kids happy is to feed them well. A proper snack time means an array of options, and something for everyone. By presenting snacks in a creative way, kids will get to choose what they want to eat, providing an increased sense of individuality. Self Help Tips – 4 Ways to Cut Your Energy Bills (5 If You’re Up to It) – Home

Heavy Construction News

(NewsUSA) – Sponsored by GAF – Pity we don’t all have the stamina of the greenest of greenies.

Think about it: At least some of them have been known to hook up a stationary bike to a solar battery pack, pedal away while maybe thinking of an idyllic life in the rain forests of Brazil, and they’ve generate enough stored power to operate their kitchen appliances and computers.

Okay, so it takes 10 minutes of pedaling just to run the toaster. But, hey, the point is, there are lots of ways you might not have thought of to cut your energy bills this summer.

Here are some of the more realistic ones for homeowners:

* Make your yard work for you. It’s already been hammered into our heads that strategically placed greenery can add to a house’s all-important “curb appeal.” Well, guess what? Adding trees, shrubs and spiffy vine-covered trellises also happens to work wonders against the sizzling sun.

“Trees reduce bills not just by shading your house, but by cooling the air by releasing moisture,” Asa Foss of the U.S. Green Building Council told AARP.

* Ceiling fans are your new best bud. Decrease the use of electricity-gobbling air conditioners with this simple little trick: “[Running fans] counterclockwise will push hot air up in the summer” — your goal — “and clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your rooms warmer during cooler months,” advises U.S. News & World Report.

* Make sure your attic is properly ventilated. You almost might as well just send your utility company a blank check if you lack what Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for Advancement of Roofing Excellence, calls “a continual flow of air to help protect the efficiency of your attic’s insulation.” The culprit working against achieving that: excess moisture buildup that clings to your roof’s underside in winter from seemingly benign sources — i.e., appliances, showers and cooking vapors — before ultimately soaking the insulation when the condensed moisture falls.

Joplin’s suggestion to help ward off the problem? A properly balanced ventilation system consisting of Cobra Ridge Vent (installed at the ridge) and Cobra IntakePro (installed at the eave) by GAF (gaf.com), North America’s leading roofing manufacturer. “Both work in tandem to allow cool, fresh air to enter at the eave edge while forcing moist, super-heated air out of the ridge vent,” he explains.

* Beware sneaky thermostats. Sure, your big-screen TVs all over the house are the envy of the neighborhood, but you’re making an expensive mistake if they — or even lamps — are positioned near air-conditioning thermostats. “The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary,” advises the website Home Energy Saver.

Quick, move them.

Self Help Tips – Abordar El Hielo y La Nieve desde El Suelo Hasta – Auto

Heavy Construction News
