Business News – Codename Zuma: SpaceX is about to launch a secret mission

SpaceX launches secretive space plane

After more than a month of delays, SpaceX might finally be ready to launch a secretive spacecraft, Zuma.

If all goes as planned, a SpaceX rocket will lift off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Sunday. A two-hour launch window begins at 8 p.m. ET.

The space exploration firm, which is headed by Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, initially scheduled the secretive Zuma mission for last November, but a series of delays pushed it back.

SpaceX gave some reasons for the schedule changes. At one point, SpaceX said it was delaying the mission for “fairing testing.” The fairing is the very top portion of the rocket that houses the payload. “Extreme weather” also slowed down the company’s launch preparations.

Last week, SpaceX finally declared that both the rocket and the payload were “healthy” and ready for launch.

Zuma is headed for low-Earth orbit, but we don’t know exactly where. SpaceX will likely cut off its customary live stream of the launch early in order to avoid dropping any hints about the spacecraft’s final destination. It has done so during other secretive missions.

Zuma was built for the U.S. government, and it’s not unusual for the government to keep information about sensitive payloads under wraps. Typically these payloads involve a military concern, such as national security, defense or surveillance.

When asked about the project in November, Northrop Grumman (NOC) — the Virginia-based aerospace and defense company that says it’s “involved” in the Zuma mission — declined to give any details about the spacecraft or reveal which arm of the government funded it.

“The U.S. Government assigned Northrop Grumman the responsibility of acquiring launch services for this mission,” the company said in a statement. “Northrop Grumman realizes this is a monumental responsibility and we have taken great care to ensure the most affordable and lowest risk scenario for Zuma.”

ArsTechnica reported in November that Zuma actually belongs to the National Reconnaissance Office, a U.S. government agency that develops and maintains spy satellites. The report acknowledges, however, that the NRO has publicly denied that the Zuma payload belongs to the agency.

SpaceX has conducted one secretive launch for the NRO before. Last May, SpaceX put an NRO spy satellite into orbit. But in that case, the agency did not shy away from claiming involvement.

SpaceX also launched a covert space plane in September for the U.S. Air Force.

Even if SpaceX doesn’t live stream the entire flight Sunday, it’s worth sticking around after liftoff.

That’s because SpaceX will attempt to execute its signature move: guiding the first-stage rocket booster back to Earth for a safe landing.

SpaceX lands boosters so they can be reused in future missions. It’s meant to help make spaceflight cheaper.

Sunday’s launch will mark the first mission of 2018 for SpaceX. Last year was already a banner one for the company. It completed 18 missions in 2017, more than any other private-sector launch provider.

By comparison, the company launched just eight times in 2016.

SpaceX has plans for an even more impressive year ahead. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell told SpaceNews in November that the firm plans “increase our cadence next year about 50%” in 2018.

The company also plans to debut a massive new rocket called Falcon Heavy. It’s supposed to be the most powerful operational rocket in the world, according to specs released by SpaceX.

The first Falcon Heavy test launch is slated for sometime this month.

Technology News – KweliTV is Netflix for black people, by black people, starring black people aims to be the go-to streaming media platform for black filmmakers all over the world to share their content and make money from its distribution. KweliTV handpicks all of its content, with 98 percent of the content having been official selections at film festivals worldwide.

“There are a lot of really great filmmakers out there globally,” KweliTV founder DeShuna Spencer told me. “For us, we’re offering an avenue for filmmakers of color to make money off of their work and be celebrated for the work they do.”

Perhaps, more importantly, KweliTV wants to be a source of authentic storytelling of the black community from the black perspective. A recent study showed the mainstream media (news and opinion media) offers a consistently warped view of black people and black families. For example, black families represent 59 percent of the poor in mainstream media even though they make up just 27 percent of low-income people, according to Color of Change. Meanwhile, white families make up just 17 percent of low-income people while they officially represent 66 percent of the country’s low-income population.

Kweli, which means “truth” in Swahili, aims to tell all sides of the black experience. In order for content to be featured on KweliTV, the the main character needs to be of African descent and “not the sidekick, the friend of the fair godmother,” KweliTV founder DeShuna Spencer told me. “The black person has to be the main character.”

An example of some KweliTV content is a film called Something Necessary. Created by Kenyan filmmaker Judy Kibinge, Something Necessary explores life after the civil unrest in Kenya following the 2007 elections through the eyes of a woman named Anne. In 2013, the film was nominated for audience choice award at the Chicago International Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

There are currently 200 titles on the platform, with KweliTV adding about three titles a week in the categories of documentary, shorts and full-length features. Subscribers can watch KweliTV on the web or via Roku, Apple TV or Google Play. Unlike Netflix, the goal is not to have an endless library of content. Instead. KweliTV wants to keep it intimate with no more than 500 titles at a time.

KweliTV, which launched out of beta just a few months ago, currently has 2,000 paying subscribers. By the end of the year, the goal is to hit 30,000 paid subscribers. An annual membership costs $49.99/year and a monthly one costs $5.99.

As a value-add to the streaming content, KweliTV partners with other black-owned businesses to offer discounts and other perks to its subscribers. Subscribers can access discounts at companies like Heritage Box, Black Card Revoked, African Ancestry and others.

On the creator side, filmmakers get paid based on how many minutes people spend viewing their content. More specifically, 60 percent of Kweli.TV’s revenue goes to filmmakers, who get paid quarterly.

In alignment with Spencer’s desire to keep it intimate, KweliTV is going to start hosting in-person events for its members to connect with each other. The first event will be next month.

“We really see Kweli as being a community more than a streaming service,” Spencer said. “Our customers are asking us to be more community-oriented.”

KweliTV is a bootstrapped company in the traditional sense, meaning it hasn’t raised funding from any angel investors or VCs. The company has, however, won $20,000 from a couple of startup competitions.

“It’s a full-time job to raise money,” Spencer said. “That’s not to say we’ll never raise but today, my focus is on revenue.”

One of KweliTV’s competitors, Afrostream, shut down last August, despite raising $4 million in capital. Spencer pointed to Afrostream as a bit of a cautionary tale of trying to grow too quickly.

Instead of becoming a unicorn, Spencer sees her company as a zebra. Unlike unicorns, zebras a profitable and work to improve society, and KweliTV is achieving both of those requirements.

Business News – ‘Fire and Fury’ publisher is rushing to print more books

Author of bombshell Trump book speaks out

The publisher of Michael Wolff’s new book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” can’t print copies fast enough.

Henry Holt is facing a backlog of orders from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other booksellers. The publishing house is rushing to print more books, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told CNNMoney.

A Henry Holt spokeswoman said sales figures are not yet available for “Fire and Fury.” But it has been No. 1 on Amazon’s best sellers list since Wednesday, when the first excerpts from the book were published online.

The e-book edition is available anytime, of course — it’s the hardcover deliveries that are delayed. Amazon is warning customers of a “2 to 4 week” wait, although copies could ship sooner if the printing schedule allows it.

From coast to coast, bookstores have been reportedly selling out of the book, if they had any copies in the first place.

For starters, the book originally wasn’t even supposed to be on sale until Tuesday. After the book’s stunning claims about President Trump’s competency began to leak out, Trump tried to stop publication with a cease-and-desist letter. Henry Holt then moved up the release date by four days.

While stores were allowed to begin selling the book Friday, some didn’t receive shipments in time.

Some stores have resorted to setting up wait lists for antsy customers who would prefer the print edition instead of an e-book.

In newsrooms, too, “Fire and Fury” is a hot commodity. Some journalists have been sharing copies with each other.

There also appears to be an emerging piracy problem. Social media commenters say they have seen illegal digital copies of the book making the rounds.

Book publishing is very much an art, not a science, and companies make educated guesses about how much demand there will be for every new release.

Some observers are now second-guessing Henry Holt’s decisions. They surmise that the publisher underestimated just how much interest there would be.

“It’s bad. Very bad,” Ron Charles, the editor of the Washington Post’s Book World section, said Saturday on Twitter.

Charles cited the Amazon delay and said that “two weeks is an eternity in this scandal-an-hour era.”

“To be fair,” he added, “book sales are very hard to predict in advance.”

According to the publishing source who told CNNMoney of Henry Holt’s rush to print more copies, there were multiple printings of the book in advance, even before the early release. That’s because Henry Holt knew Wolff’s reporting was explosive.

But it wasn’t enough.

On Sunday, the Barnes & Noble website promoted the book as “the political expose everyone is talking about.” But it listed a two-week delay in hardcover deliveries.

Perhaps no one could have expected the White House to provide so much fuel for Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” promotional tour.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders’ criticisms of the book, Trump’s tweets about it and the cease-and-desist letter all stirred even more interest in the book.

Sanders said Thursday that Americans “probably could care less about a book full of lying.”

That claim is contradicted by all the sold-out signs at bookstores.

And Wolff is just beginning his TV tour to promote the book, meaning there are many days of headlines still to come.

Related: Michael Wolff asks Trump, ‘Where do I send the box of chocolates?’

Wolff appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday and said “this is 25th Amendment kind of stuff.” The amendment establishes procedures for replacing the President or Vice President in the event of death, removal, resignation or incapacitation.

“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked: “Did people in the West Wing bring that up to you?”

“All the time,” Wolff responded.

The book tour will continue on “CBS This Morning,” “Morning Joe,” the PBS “NewsHour,” the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and other shows Monday.

Other books are also benefiting from all the attention. Randall Hansen, author of the nine-year-old book “Fire and Fury: The Allied Bombing of Germany,” tweeted that his sales “have increased.” Presumably, some people ordered the wrong “Fury” book by mistake.

Two upcoming books that are deeply critical of Trump — David Cay Johnston’s “It’s Even Worse Than You Think” and David Frum’s “Trumpocracy” — have also seen upticks in pre-orders in recent days, according to Amazon’s data.
